Triathlon Rules

Rules Ocean Lava Triathlon

Canaria Triathlon Federation regulations

At the Ocean Lava Lanzarote Triathlon we are following the Canarian Triathlon Federations regulations.

Helmets

  • No modifications may be made to the helmet.
  • Helmets must be worn as they were purchased.
  • Helmets must be worn at all times while on your bike.
  • Penalty: Disqualification

Chin Straps

  • Chin straps must be buckled at all times.
  • Do not unbuckle your chin strap unless you are off your bicycle.
  • Penalty: Disqualification on the course; various time penalties in transition area .

Outside Assistance

  • No assistance other than that offered by race and medical officials may be used.
  • Triathlons are individual tests of fitness.
  • Penalty: Various time penalties.

Transition Area

  • All equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corral.
  • All participants must return their bicycles in an upright position in their designated bicycle parking.
  • No person shall interfere with another participant’s equipment or impede its progress.
  • Penalty: Various time penalties.

Drafting

  • Keep at least three bike lengths (7m) of clear space between you and the cyclist in front of you.
  • If you move into the zone, you must pass within 15 seconds.
  • Keep to the right hand side of the lane unless passing.
  • Riding on the left side without passing anyone and interfering with other cyclists attempting to pass.
  • Once passed, you must immediately exit the draft zone from the rear, before passing again.
  • Penalty: Various time penalties.

Course

  • All competitors are required to follow the prescribed course.
  • Cutting or leaving the course is an obvious violation or safety issue.
  • Cyclists must not cross the solid white centre line.
  • Cyclists must obey all applicable traffic laws at all times.
  • Penalty:Various time penalties or disqualification.

Unsportsmanlike-Like Conduct

  • Foul, harsh, argumentative or abusive language.
  • Other unsportsmanlike conduct directed at race officials, volunteers, spectators or fellow athletes.
  • Penalty: Disqualification

Headphones

  • Headphones, headsets, walkmans, etc. must not be worn at any time during the race.
  • Penalty: Various time penalties.

Race numbers

  • Athletes must wear the race number on their bike and helmets.
  • Runners must wear the race number pinned to the front of their t-shirt.
  • Numbers must face the front and must be clearly visible at all times.
  • Numbers may not be cut or folded or altered in any way.
  • Do not transfer your number or take a number from an athlete that is not competing.
  • Penalty: Disqualification & suspension when transferring numbers without race directors permit.

Wetsuits

  • Wetsuits are allowed

Littering

  • All equipment and belongings must stay on the athlete the entire time.
  • No garbage, clothing, etc. must be thrown on the course.
  • Glass containers are prohibited during the race and in the transition area.
  • Penalty: Various time penalties  and disqualification for glass containers

Commandments of Triathlon

To assure a safe and fun event for you & your fellow triathletes, please consider to the following:

  1. Read the information on this web site in its entirety.
  2. Listen to the pre race briefing carefully, and make sure to get answers to all your race-related questions.
  3. Arrive at the transition area early! That means 6:30am - 7:15am. If you get there late, you may be shut out & prevented from racing. Allow lots of time for traffic, parking, getting to the site and checking your bike in the transition.
  4. Remember to bring along (2) water bottles already filled for the bike. Bring water to drink on the way to the race & before the race.
  5. The transition area closes at 7:30am & re-opens at approximately 14:15 after the cut of time for the bike leg. Do not leave anything in transition that you'll need after you finish the race. For reasons of safety and fairness we will be enforcing this rule strictly. You need to, adjust your travel, work or social plans around these times before race day.
  6. Take every opportunity to hydrate during the race.Do not rely on thirst to tell you when to drink.While biking, do not toss empty water bottles on the course.Water bottles on the road are a safety hazard.
  7. If you get into trouble in the swim roll onto your back and raise an arm in the air.If you experience mechanical difficulties during the bike carefully pull over to the left so as not to endanger other athletes.Then wait for a pick up vehicle.Repairs should not be made on the course unless you are out of the bicycle lanes.
  8. Keep to the RIGHT at all times on the bike course unless in the immediate act of passing. Always pass on the LEFT and then move immediately back to the right once you are sure you have safely cleared the cyclist you were passing.
  9. After finishing be respectful of other athletes in the race. Please treat other athletes at least as well as you would like to be treated.
  10. Have fun, be organized and stay safe.
